The column graph depicts four interests enjoyed by Australian youngsters, in three age groups from 5 to 16 years old in 2012. The horizontal axis lists The pursuits, of Watching TV, Reading, Art andRiding the bike. The vertical axis records measurements as a percentage. (45 words)

Overall, the most striking feature is that Watching TV 'was the most popular with all groupings, whilst art the further well - practiced. (21 words)

Firstly, "Watching TV" by the most interest, at 90% for 5 to 8 years old rising steadily to peak at 98 % for 12 to 16 years old. Reading  was less popular with percentages markedly lower, generally by 30%. The youngest group beginning at 65%, rising slightly to 70 and 72% respectively for the other age groups. However, data for the 'Art' category revealed a moderate decline and were the lowest, at 60 and 55%. Furthermore, the eldest classification was not shown. Though the second most enjoyed activity, "Riding the bike 'presented the greatest changeability, dipping from 75 to65 % for 9 to 11 years old only to rise substantially for teenagers at 85%. It is true we live in a throw-away society'. Planned obsolesce is the cornerstone of many manufacturing companies that drive the economies of nations these days .Although the reasons behind this disposable culture are diverse, several key denominators are apparent  which I will expand on in this essay. (48 words)

To begin with, govenments are keen on developing economic activities To stimulate growth andfull employment. The spending power of workers drives up living standards. Which in turn encourages greater consumerism. Moreover, many want the latest and the greatest of some new technological marvel, whehter  this is a state - of - the - art mobile phone, flat secreen high definition TV or hybrid SUV. Because of this, Vanity, coupled with keeping up with the Joneses is a serious business and some will sell their souls for the latest trend setting fad which mimics the affluent.

Furthermore, this consumerism is largely driven by the media. Advertising selling 'a dream of affluence' are now global. The reach of the Internet especially via mobile devices has yet to peak.Therefore, manufacturers now the design, produce and sell commodities to global markets, where in less developed nations, technical skills for repairs are in a shortage. Unfortunately, this is exacerbates the throw-away philosophy' rather than the notion of reducing consumption by repair and reuse.
As a result, pollution is on the rise, the world's natural resources are further stretched, and skilled repair specialists are becoming fewer. (94 words)

To conclude, advances in technology, as well as changes in both economic and social structures are fueling this trend. The detrimental effects of pollution caused by this wasteful extravagance are gathering strength. I believe it is time our society take a step back and take remedial measure so improve not only the environment we live in, but also in the way we value living a happy life.(67 words)
