This conversation happened when I just arrived in Vancouver about 10 days ago. It was in the afternoon and I just got off the sky train from the airport. I was a bit confused about where to exit because there seemed to be at least three exits. My destination was my friend’s home and she was working at that time and couldn’t be able to pick me up from the station, so I had to find my own way. It was not a big problem since I could read the signs and ask people if I had to. I saw stairs and somehow, I felt it was the right way, so I decided to go down the stairs and leave the station. I was caring a luggage, not too big and I could handle it without any problem. When I was going downstairs, there was a man walking up towards me. I was a bit confused because he seemed to walk in the wrong direction since there were more stairs and he didn’t have to come this way. I stopped and waited. I thought he would walk up and leave. Instead, he stopped too and smiled at me and waved at me. I felt a bit scared and held my luggage tighter. Then I heard him say, “let me help you with the luggage”, at the same time, he ran up and took my luggage. That was the moment I felt extremely worried because now I could see that he was a vagrant. What if he wanted to rob my luggage and run? What if he started to force me to give him money? I couldn’t believe I would meet such a thing on the first day in Vancouver. Eventually, it turned out that he was just trying to help and didn’t intend to steal anything from me. It was such a big relief and I asked him the way to my destination. He showed me the way nicely and I said thank you so much to him a few times. Then, I almost started to run to my direction and didn’t look back. For a tiny girl like me, I really worried that I would be bullied by some stranger randomly. I had to protect myself. Even though I trusted him in the end, I still felt a bit nervous thinking about all this. I asked myself why did I had a stereotype only because he was in rags. Probably because I’ve heard too many horrible stories of girls being murdered in a foreign country or similar stories like that. I felt upset about such accidents. I knew that I needed more time to trust a person and a city. How long would it take? It’s really hard to say. I am grateful that I didn’t meet a bad person and a very nice gentleman helped me on my first day to a new city. Because of him, I would love to trust strangers again.
